WHEN TO CALL THE PEDIATRIC DENTIST
If you are unsure of whether your child is experiencing a dental emergency, RVAPD urges you to call and we will help determine if your child needs to be seen right away or within the next few days. Here are some urgent reasons to contact your child’s pediatric dentist:
- Broken or Fractured Tooth – It is not uncommon for children to chip teeth during play or even tripping and falling. Broken or fractured teeth can cause severe pain and the sooner we see your child the better the outcome will be for your child’s tooth, as well as their pain level.
- Knocked-out Tooth – A true dental emergency. If your older child completely knocks their tooth out, if you are comfortable with it, then the best option is to rinse with saliva and place the tooth back in the socket. If you are uncomfortable doing so, then place the tooth in the patient’s saliva or milk. In either case, call a dental office immediately as the tooth may be able to be saved. Never try to put a primary (baby) tooth back. Do not place a tooth in a younger child’s mouth as they might choke or swallow the tooth.
- Dental Decay – cavities are not usually dental emergencies; however, it is possible to experience pain with decay. We can schedule an appointment to exam your child’s teeth and determine a treatment plan for the decay. If a primary tooth is severely decayed, it may require an extraction.
- Severe Tooth Pain – If your child is experiencing severe pain in a tooth or teeth, you will want to call RVAPD as soon as possible. Your child may have an abscessed tooth that needs to be treated immediately. Call us to schedule and emergency dentistry appointment right away.
- Lost Filling – Fillings can sometimes become loose or even fall out completely. If this happens, you can call our office and we can schedule an emergency dentistry appointment to make the repair.
