Pediatric dental check up richmond vaWe all know that kids love their juices and sugar-filled treats, but with those delicious snacks come a larger problem: tooth decay. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research reports that 59% of adolescents ages 12-19 have cavities in their permanent teeth, and 20% of that population have untreated decay. We know that 100% of parents have questions about cavities!

Untreated cavities can lead to abscesses and even removal of teeth, which can be scary for many parents. However, with a few tips and tricks, parents can stray away from cavity-forming habits and choose appropriate steps for when a cavity does develop.

RVA Pediatric Dentistry in Richmond Va shares some cavity FAQs for our patients and their families, so that they can work to avoid the pitfalls of cavities.

How do cavities happen?

Cavities are permanently damaged areas on the surface of your teeth that eventually develop into tiny holes. They are caused by a variety of factors, including bacteria, sugary drinks, frequent snacking and improper cleaning.

Drinks like soda and chocolate milk leave sugar on the teeth, which attracts bacteria that then leaves acid that eats away at your teeth. Additionally, regular snacking can cause cavities because it doesn’t allow saliva time to naturally clean the mouth.

What are common cavity symptoms?

Symptoms of cavities vary depending on their location and severity, and those with a new cavity may not experience any symptoms. However, as a cavity progresses, a person typically will experience:

  • Toothache
  • Tooth sensitive, particularly when ingesting sweets or food that is hot or cold
  • Visible holes in the teeth
  • Pain when chewing
  • Staining of a tooth, typically that is white, black or brown

What do I do if I suspect my child has a cavity?

If you suspect your child may have a cavity, set up an appointment with a pediatric dentist. Remember, however, that cavities can develop at any time so it’s best to have routine check-ups and cleanings to nip cavities in the bud. Routine dentist visits can be the difference between one cavity and five.

How are cavities treated?

Once a pediatric dentist has diagnosed your child’s cavity he or she may choose to fill it, cap it or monitor it further. If it’s a minor cavity, a dentist may prescribe a more rigorous flossing and brushing routine and check the cavity again at a future appointment.

However, for more serious cases, a filling often is used. Fillings are a mixture of plastic and resin which are poured into the hole formed by the cavity to even it out. For severe cases, a dentist with use a cap, which involves placing a crown on the tooth. The crown then protects the tooth from future cavities.

How can my child prevent cavities?

The most important weapon against cavities is a good hygiene routine. Teach your child from a young age the importance of daily flossing and brushing. The best way to teach is by example so grab your brush, too, and make teeth time fun with a game or a song. Also, monitor your child’s nutrition. While the occasional soda or juice box is OK, try offering water when possible.

If I frequently get cavities, will my child also get them?

Some people are more prone to cavities than others. However, this does not mean that cavities themselves are genetic.

If your cavities are due to a high-sugar diet or a slackened brushing routine, your child may be more prone to the same lifestyle. After all, children typically learn hygiene routines from their parents.

How can a pediatric dentist keep my child’s teeth healthy?

Visiting the dentist’s office for many children can be scary, but a pediatric dentist can help overcome that hurdle. Pediatric dentists offer all the same services as a dentist for adults, but they do it in a way that is geared toward children, especially when those children have questions about cavities, brushing and flossing, and how to keep their smiles bright.

The staff will be trained to handle children and the dentists will specialize in caring for primary, or baby, teeth. They can make good oral hygiene fun and exciting while minimizing your child’s pain or fear. Creating a good relationship with a dentist from a young age is vital to a child’s oral health.
